Sony Mavica FD91

When I purchased my first digital camera well over a decade ago, I did not realize how technology would advance...and advance it did. My first digital camera was a Sony Mavica DF91. It was a .9 megapixel camera which yields a 1024x768 pixel image. The unique feature at the time was that it stored these images on a 1.44MB floppy diskette. I may have some of those stored somewhere...

The family took a trip with the marching band to London, England for the Lord Mayor's New Year's Parade. We were also able to tour some of the more historic sites while there. I took 50 brand new diskettes with me in my suitcase. The camera had a whopping 14x optical zoom. It had the longest length lens available at the time for a digital camera. It did poorly in low light conditions with shutter speeds between 60 and 1/4000 of a second. Mine cost well over $600 and you can get them coming and going for less than $45 now. They are still for sale and would actually be great for web based images which are only 72dpi and rarely need to be larger than 1024pixels on the longest side.

Here are some shots taken during New Year's 2001 holidays with the Sony FD91:
